Lakes near me
The mapped Minnesota lakes closest to where you are, with distance and direction — for a road you don’t know, or for putting a name to the lake out the window. 1,964 lakes are on this site; the one in front of you may not be among them yet.
Your position is used on this device only: it is never sent to us, never stored, and never written into the address bar. With the satellite backdrop on, the page fetches the picture for your area from our own image host one cell at a time; a cell is about 20 km across, so that request reveals nothing finer. Turn the backdrop off and nothing is fetched at all. The list keeps updating while this page is open. Passengers only — never use it while driving.
You appear to be far from Minnesota’s mapped lakes. The publisher’s other sites: Michigan Lake Depths and Indiana Lake Depths and Ontario Lake Depths.
Distances are straight-line estimates to each lake’s shore, not driving distances; on long, narrow or many-armed lakes they can be off by a few miles. Directions are from true north, and “on your right” uses your direction of travel when the device reports one. Only lakes with a depth map on this site are listed.
How it works
- Nothing leaves your phone but a cell number. The lake list downloads once; your position is compared against it in the browser, and the browser asks your permission first. The satellite backdrop comes from our own image host in quarter-degree cells — no map company, no key, nothing finer than the cell.
- Ranked by shoreline, not by lake middle. A big lake beside you outranks a pond a mile off, because the distance is estimated to each lake’s shore.
- Works offline. Once you have opened this page, it and the lake list stay on your device, along with any lake maps you have visited and the backdrop cells you have seen.
- Planning ahead? Add a point to the address to list lakes around it without
